Develop Without Borders Contest

Develop Without Borders Contest Microsoft has launched a very cool contest that challenges developers around the world to design Office business applications that support non-profit organizations and encourages them to learn more about the 2007 Microsoft Office system at the same time. The contest is called Develop without Borders.  It offers over $150,000 in prizes. The concept is simple:  Developers choose a charitable organization that they would like to help, understand the business challenges that it faces, and propose a solution based on the 2007 Office system that addresses one or more of those challenges.  The solutions that make the most impact on the organization and that best utilize the Office system technologies can win up to $50,000 to help pilot or implement the solution. What I mean by System Programming?

System Programming is one of most sought after skills. Many of the application developers think system programming as working with command window, doing some black & white stuff and being away from Colors, UIs and Images. It's not true. System programming means working with system. Writing the code, keeping in mind the underlying system capabilities. When you execute an instruction, it will be executed by the CPU by talking to the kernel. I bet most of the ASP.NET /JSP programmers don't even know, how HTTP handlers are written? How Request is processed? How WebServer works? They merely know the system basics. What they know is Langauge Systex and Features. In my openion, every programmer should learn the internals of the operating system first. So that they can write efficient code.Thoughts on Life, Events and Current Happenings...

Back to Systems…

Last week, I was attending "Windows Internals" class. The class was fantastic. Instructure was so knowledgeable that he answered almost each of the questions. Its like going back to the days from where I had started. I still remember the starting days of my college when I used to read and code in C. For me everything used to start with C and end with C. One of the C masters, I used to interact on a daily basis was Ashish Jain - My best friend and Guru. He helped me a lot in learning C. When I got selected in my Campus Recruitment in Legato Systems, people recognized me as a C master. Those days are unforgattable. The kind of respect I got from people was remarkable. After spending almost 5 years in Application programming, I just thought of doing something on Systems side and things came to my way to give me the freedom to do so. I have...

Moderating a User Group

Today, I would like to share some of my experiences with .NET User Group Community.I have started Indore .NET User Group in Jan 2003. It was an collaborative effort by Ms. Shilpa Jha(my friend) & Me. Mr. Deepak Gulati (MVP Lead at Microsoft) has given me an eye opener session about the community and the power of sharing knowledge. He encouraged us to go ahaed and start a User Group for Indore. This group was intended for discussing Microsoft Technologies. Due to the fact that I used to take seminars in Colleges almost every weekend, I could manage to get more user registrations to the group. MSDN yatra and other Microsoft events were happening that time but they were not listing the local user groups. Then, we gave this feedback through Deepak and they have implemented a common practice to include the local user group URL at the end of the presentation. In the very first year Shilpa and I...

Working with Virtual Server 2005 and Virtual PC

Working with Virtual Server 2005 and Virtual PC

Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 is one of the best tools available for simulating multiple operating environment on a single machine. It helps presentors, testers, developers and system admins to deploy and test different scenarios on a single physical system. How it works:Virtual PC emulates a standard PC and its associated hardware. Thus, it can be used to run nearly all operating systems available for the PC.However, issues can arise when trying to install uncommon operating systems that have not been specifically targeted in the development of Virtual PC.Virtual PC gives you freedom to create Virtual HDD (.vhd) file which holds the entire image of the targeted Operating system. You need to create a new Virtual Machine to work. A Virtual machine represents an operating system image. When you click on "New", the Virtual Machine creation wizard will appear. Here you can create a new Virtual Machine (.vmc) or use an existing Virtual Maching that you already have. In this wizard it will ask...

BRE Policy Unit Testing in BizTalk 2006

BizTalk Rules Composer Helps us creating a Business Rule. A set of Business Rules is called a Policy. A Policy is given a version.A Rule can be composed from a Vocublary which may contain a Database Table/Field/Row or .NET Class or XML Schema. The Testing of Database or XML Schema based policies are quite simple. For a Database based policy, one has to provide the connection information and rest is taken care of by the Rule Engine internally. For a XML based policy, one has to provide an instance of the policy i.e. an XML Message. The tricky part is Testing a .NET Class based policy. It requires you to provide a .NET Class which must implemement IFactCreator or IFactRetriver interface. This is a tedius process for testers. To fasten your testing, you can create your own .NET program which can take a XML Message and Deserialize it to your class and pass that class to your RuleEngine.I 'll be providing code...

Biztalk 2004 & SMS 2003 : Installation Experience.

Today I was installing Biztalk 2004, once again for my new project. At times, it looks really painful downloading the prerequisites and then installing. The funny thing is some of the prerequisites are not properly mentioned on the Microsoft Download Website. For example, if you want to download SQL Analysis Server 2000 Service Pack 3a, you will be sent to a website where you will get 3 different msi's. There is no message given on the web page about which one contains what. After downloading the complete files only, you will be able to distinguish which one is of your use. I think, this issue should be raised to the website maintaince team so that they can produce more accurate and usable information.Anyway, I installed Biztalk Successfully. Howver, I will rate the experience as average. After installing this, I also installed SMS 2003 on a different machine, but the experince was totally different. It is installed quite smoothly. I would rate...

Infragistics Grid : How to set two line display in a cell

Sometimes we require to show a two line display in a grid cell. This usually happens when we have columns like OrderNo and Order Code and we want to display both in one cell. It is also a useful practice when we have too many columns and we want to display all the details. So the values can be shown using a line seperator in the cell. This can be achieved using " InitializeRow" event. This event is fired for every row. So we can set the details here like this:Visual Basic .NET Code:e.row.cells.fromKey("OrderNo").Text=e.row.cells.fromKey("OrderNo").Text +"" + e.row.cells.fromKey("OrderCode").Textore.row.cells.fromKey("OrderNo").Text=e.row.cells.fromKey("OrderNo").Text +ControlChars.crlf + e.row.cells.fromKey("OrderCode").TextThe fromkey collection can be used or you can also use the cell index to find the appropriate cell. Offcourse, you have to hide OrderCode column in the "InitializeLayout" event.~SandeepThoughts on Life, Events and Current Happenings...
